About this artwork

Prominently featured in a tint of orange is a portrait of Nnoseng Ellen Kate Khuzwayo, a revered champion of women’s rights. She developed self-help and training organizations for women and also advocated for them through the African National Congress Youth League and the Young Women’s Christian Association. Khuzwayo survived five months in prison for serving on a 10-member committee elected by Soweto residents after the 1976 uprising. On this poster her portrait is paired with an illustration derived from a photograph of children running during the Soweto uprising—an acknowledgment that the struggle against apartheid would necessarily involve multiple generations.
