About this artwork
During the 1970s and 1980s, musicians from South Africa traveled frequently to Gaborone to perform. Attended by Botswana citizens and South African exiles, such events delivered progressive songs that inspired and united different social communities. This large screenprinted poster and smaller handbill were both issued by Medu to promote performances by the jazz band Badiri!, whose name means “worker” in Setswana (a Bantu language spoken in southern Africa). The members of Badiri! were themselves local and exiled musicians.
