About this artwork

June 16, the anniversary of the Soweto uprising, is a national holiday in South Africa. The black and white illustrated figures in this poster derive from a famous photograph of schoolchildren running down the street during the uprising. Captured by Peter Magubane, one of only a few photojournalists to document the events of that day, the photograph was widely circulated in the international press. The notoriety of Magubane’s photographs resulted in his assault and harassment by the apartheid police.
