About this artwork

Published between 1984 and 2005, Emigre magazine combined critical writing on design with innovative typography and layout. The publication challenged the status quo in the field by advocating for experimentation.
Emigre (issue no. 51) opens with Ken Garland’s 1964 manifesto, First Things First, which urged designers to free themselves from commercial projects and turn to more socially conscious endeavors. By reissuing this text alongside an accompanying analytical essay endorsed by 33 leading design professionals, Emigre argued for the manifesto’s continued relevance in a society seeking alternative approaches to design on the brink of a new millennium.
