About this artwork
Published between 1984 and 2005, Emigre magazine combined critical writing on design with innovative typography and layout. The publication challenged the status quo in the field by advocating for experimentation.
Emigre, no. 46, focused on DIY (do-it-yourself) projects, specifically, fanzines, homemade publications often devoted to aspects of pop culture.
These self-directed projects allowed designers to communicate their ideas in ways that were purely their own. Although professionally designed, Emigre shared the same DIY aesthetic and niche audience as many fanzines.
