About this artwork
When Sabelo Mlangeni first moved to Johannesburg in 2001, he noted the contrast between the cleanliness of the streets in the morning and their litter-strewn condition at day’s end. His resulting series, Invisible Women, dives into the lives of the street sweepers, mostly women, who clean the streets each night in one of the world’s most dangerous cities. From February to September 2006, Mlangeni documented these workers, highlighting the challenging nature of their task and their immersion in it.
