About this artwork
In the 18 prints comprising Callot’s most prominent series, the political spirit following the Thirty Years’ War that decimated Lorraine, his native region, is evident. Although published almost 200 years prior, The Miseries of War is said to have inspired Francisco de Goya’s series The Disasters of War, to which it is often compared. The frontispiece reads: “The / Miseries and the / Misfortunes / of War/ Represented by Jacques Callot / Lorraine Noble / and published by Israel / his friend / in Paris / 1633 / With the Privilege of the King.”
