Eleanor Coen and her companion Max Kahn were the first Chicago based artists to collaborate extensively with the Taller de Gráfica Popular. Working in 1942 as guest artists in the collective’s Mexican workshop, they established lifelong friendships and became important links between the artistic worlds of Chicago and Mexico City. Prints like Reprisal show the impact of Coen’s time at the Taller, especially the introduction of overtly violent and political subjects and the sharpening of social commentary during the war years. This lithograph is part of a series of nearly a dozen such works, some with antifascist or Mexican themes. Although an inscription indicates that the print portrays a “fascist crime,” neither the location nor the violent event is specified in the composition itself, suggesting that the work can be read as a larger meditation on human violence of the era.
