About this artwork
Church Lady is one of several sculptures that William Edmondson carved of types of people from his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Edmondson first carved tombstones, later turning to subjects like this woman with her Bible that reflect the values of his African American community. By the time he had completed this work, Edmondson was on his way to broader acclaim, and in 1937 was the first black artist to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
