About this artwork

Studio Wieki Somers transforms familiar object forms into fantastical devices for storytelling. Profound attention to materials guides this process, which combines traditional and high-tech fabrication methods. The High Tea Pot and Cozy pairs a porcelain imitation of a pig’s skull with a muskrat-fur cozy. Through these objects, the bourgeois ritual of tea confronts the “uncivilized” character of undisguised animal materials. For Wieki Somers, the work is meant to prompt delight and aversion in equal measure, encouraging us to question our relationship to objects.
