About this artwork
Dirk Vander Kooij approaches cutting-edge digital technologies as a craftsman, thoughtfully attending to their inherent capabilities and limits. He used a custom 3-D printer to produce this chair from a continuous thread of recycled plastic. The finished object emerges layer by layer, with no additional assembly required. Unlike traditional plastic injection molding, this digitally driven process allows for “endless” design modifications and prototyping at no additional cost, rare features among more economical models of production.
