About this artwork
Luisa Lambri’s architectural photography is nearly abstract and focuses not on permanence (the conventional standard for buildings) but ephemerality. Details are shaped by light, a sense of time’s passage, and the experience of space. The Strathmore Apartments in Los Angeles—an 8-unit complex completed in 1937—were designed by acclaimed local architect and Modernist champion Richard Neutra, who so liked the design that he doubled the scope of the project in order to enjoy four of the units himself. Lambri, who also lives in Los Angeles, studied the Strathmore Apartments to arrive at a view from the inside to the outside. The dark mass we see, rimmed by bright sunshine, allows us to deduce the shape of a balcony beyond the window, and finally an ethereal and leafy landscape in the distance.
