About this artwork

This residence, designed for a plastic surgeon and an artist, references Le Corbusier’s idea of “architecture as a machine in the garden.” In this expansive site for the 7,000-square-foot residence, the foliage is cleaved to create a symmetrical procession to the house. Tigerman’s drawing The Villa in the Poche (on view to the right) depicts this plan along with the architectural lineage of several other residential projects. In one sketch of the house, Tigerman’s focus on the procession is highlighted by the pathway, which, similar to the pathway in the model, divides the middle of the page. The sketches also illustrate Tigerman’s design process, in which cubelike gridded blocks develop the massing and formal language of the residence.
