About this artwork

These renderings are part of the master plan that SO–IL created to expand the Kukje Gallery. The architectural proposal resolves an aesthetic and spatial disjunction between Kukje Gallery’s contemporary and dynamic artist roster and the surrounding neighborhood of Samcheong-ro, the latter marked by historic buildings patterned with a fabric of diverse materials and construction techniques. Deeming the diagrammatic box geometry too rigid for the setting, SO–IL enveloped the structure in a mesh veil, creating a nebulous surface that changes appearance as visitors move through the site. The result is a “white cube” gallery space that is softened by an innovative exterior.
