About this artwork

Challenging the sterile functionalism of compact fluorescent lightbulbs, London design company Hulger and British product designer Samuel Wilkinson reimagined these devices as aesthetic objects in their own right. Wilkinson drew on the raw qualities of the glass tubing used in low-energy bulbs to create a dynamic sculptural form that is revealed through movement. Like the best high-tech retoolings of traditional designs, the Plumen lightbulb pays homage to history with references to the arching shape of the filaments in early incandescent bulbs while promoting the cause of energy conservation for the future.
