About this artwork

Standing out from the other competition entries for the New Maribor Art Gallery is Stan Allen Architect’s proposition for a bold museum complex for cultural events and public assembly in Maribor, Slovenia. By elevating the galleries above street level, the glass-enclosed lobby space functions as an extension of a historic square that reaches to the banks of the Drava River. The articulated volume of the building relates to the scale and shapes of the nearby architecture, both announcing the museum’s presence and linking it back to the fabric of the city. This project is an extension of Stan Allen’s concept of Field Conditions, an antihierarchical design process determining relationships of program and form.
