About this artwork

In this piece, floating sailing vessels are combined with clouds that double as water, offering a sense of movement. The boats are inverted on the back of the body of the kimono, while they are upright on the sleeves. On the front of the kimono, the boats are shown in their proper orientation, while they are inverted on the sleeves. This is the result of the kimono having been cut from a single bolt of fabric and constructed without a shoulder seam. The traditional style of the vessels gives the kimono a nostalgic feel, yet the bold coloring offers a modern effect.
