About this artwork

Here psychological turmoil is depicted as physical material—a contorted figure, head tucked down between hunched shoulders, is enveloped by swathes of dark matter resembling a bomb-scarred battlefield. His body emerges as a seedlike outgrowth in a furrowed landscape. Much like the sprouting plant in the upper left, this man endures an excruciating survival and regeneration. The text in the upper-left corner asks us to “Help the Cripple,” to reach out to him, pull him out of this all-encompassing darkness, and help him return to society.
