About this artwork
Apartment is the second in a trilogy of books that Miyako Ishiuchi made about her hometown, Yokosuka, which became host to a United States naval base after World War II. Photographs in all three books are infiltrated with grit, as if the grain of the prints were actual pollution in the air. Whereas the first book, Yokosuka Story, concentrates on public space, the others take interiors as their settings. Apartment meanders through and around a rundown flat in a low-rise apartment block slated for demolition, while the final book of the trilogy, Endless Night, rhapsodizes about the spaces of a love hotel.
