About this artwork
Italian designer Luisa Cevese developed Ply, a contemporary line of textiles, for the textile manufacturer Maharam. After years of work in the production of textiles, Cevese was exposed to the large amount of waste produced in the industry. In response to this, the designer created Riedizioni, a line of textiles that repurposed this waste by sandwiching salvages, mill ends, and other remnants between sheets of polyurethane to give new life to this otherwise discarded material. For her line Ply, Cevese utilized this proprietary process to develop designs that incorporate three basic patterns of squares, stripes, and diamonds, from interlocking yarns encased in translucent PVCfree polyurethane sheets. The simple patterns reflect Cevese’s belief that pattern is only one component of a textile; the yarn, color, and finish are just as important.
