About this artwork

Working across all fields of visual communications, Bruce Mau strives to make works of social significance and meaning. Invited by the Fundación Proyecto de Vida, a collective of Guatemalan leaders, to create a campaign that would encourage Guatemalans to think positively about their country’s future, Mau’s studio created ¡GuateAmala!, which translated from Spanish means “To love Guatemala.” This attention-grabbing slogan began as the centerpiece of a series of projects launched in 2006 that included the posters shown here. Installed across the country, these vibrant works—featuring local inhabitants and portraying the rich culture and heritage of Guatemala—became a provocative communication tool.
