About this artwork

A Tewa ceramist from Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico, Sara Fina Tafoya became well known in the early 20th century for making large, burnished, blackware ceramics, often with bear paw motifs like this example. Her legacy as the matriarch of a renowned family of potters continues today: a work by her grandson Joseph Lonewolf (1932–2014) is also in the the Arts of the Americas collection.
