About this artwork

In observance of its 75th anniversary, the Chicago Tribune announced in 1922 its plans for an architectural competition to design “the most beautiful office building in the world.” The $100,000 competition elicited 264 entries from around the world. The winning entry, a Gothic-inspired tower designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells, was built at 345 N. Michigan Avenue in 1923–1925. One of the honorable mentions went to this entry by Japanese-American architect Richard Yoshijiro Mine, who used the Woolworth Building as a source of inspiration for his design.
