About this artwork

The pattern of this woven kesa reflects the strong influence of European styles on Japanese designers during the first quarter of the 20th century. The pattern is dominated by highly ornamentalized butterflies and complex floral forms, combined with a whirring energy reminiscent of 1920s Art Deco.
