About this artwork
Kori Newkirk, based in Los Angeles, examines common cultural signifiers associated with black American identities through self-reflexive images that depict plastic hair beads, braided hair extensions and pomade, basketballs, and elements of hip-hop fashion. Ironically pointing to the mythologies that revolve around these tropes, Newkirk destabilizes assumptions about identity. Void of Silence, Father/ Brother/Son directly remarks on the dual nature of symbols; crossed fingers can represent a wish for good luck or a safeguard against the consequences of a lie depending on their position relative to the body.
