About this artwork

Like many of his fellow students at the Institute of Design during the postwar period, Lyle Mayer combined a raw documentary sensibility with the school’s highly formal, graphic aesthetic. By the mid-1950s he was operating a commercial photography studio and teaching evening classes at the school. Mayer avidly explored Chicago’s diverse urban landscape. His subjects ranged from transient hotels on North Clark Street to rush hour scenes near Madison Street and Pulaski Road.
