About this artwork

Chicago craftsman Renard Koehnemann created custom-designed, handmade sterling silver chalices and patens for newly ordained priests. These opulent examples, however, were produced for the artist himself, who believed that each piece should represent a contemporary aesthetic. A student of Daniel Pederson of Chicago’s Kalo workshop—the city’s premier source for handwrought silver wares in the first half of the 20th century—Koehnemann achieved elegant expressions of modernity through simple forms and the use of contrasting colored materials.
