About this artwork

This mask is defined by its abstract human features, segmented approach to form, and line of bright blue color around the middle section of the helmet. Most likely the mask comes from southwest Burkina Faso, an area where several interrelated cultures coexisted for several centuries. Masks and figures with crested coiffures and contrasting colors are found in many parts of the region.
