About this artwork
As early as the 1860s, consumers of photographs manipulated commercial portraits, cutting and pasting them into albums filled with watercolor scenes or embellishing them with painted or collaged elements. In this postcard from a commercial studio, an unknown maker added human hair, a woven hat, and a hand-painted wrap to a portrait of a woman, creating a whimsical and more personal presentation.
