About this artwork

After creating a body of work exploring cartography and topology, Guillermo Kuitca turned to making paintings based on selected floor plans or blueprints for anonymous institutional structures. The subject appealed to the artist as a way to investigate the regimented and anonymous aspects of contemporary, urban life. Devoid of any signs of human activity, Kuitca’s ghostlike compositions blur the distinction between real and imaginary space. This canvas belongs to the Puro Teatro series, a group of seventeen works from 1995 based upon theater interiors. The theater motif is an especially significant architectural source for Kuitca: as a young painter in Argentina he first received critical recognition for a group of enigmatic works inspired by the performing arts.
