About this artwork

Jonathan Richardson was a portrait painter, author, and collector, who often copied Old Master drawings in his collection. His second son, Isaac, died at sea in 1721 at the age of 17. Based on a painting of 1712, this compelling image was part of a group of portraits on vellum that Richardson drew in the 1730s as a record of those closest to him.
