Unmarked recto; inscribed verso, on mount, along bottom edge, in black ink: JS.229.0 108th Street and Cottage Grove, Chicago, Illinois, December 1994 N-December 1994 / P-September 1996 Joel Sternfeld In 1994, Robert Sandifer, an eleven-year-old gang member, fired a semi-automatic pistol into a group of teenagers playing football. Shavon Dean, a bystander, was killed by the shots. Three days after he killed Dean, Robert Sandifer was found dead under this railroad viaduct. He had been shot twice in the back of the head by members of his own gang, who feared he would reveal information if arrested. From the series, On This Site: Landscape in Memoriam
