About this artwork
Sigmar Polke has expanded the representational possibilities of photography by combining different techniques. Here, the murkiness of the figures mirrors the chemical reactions of the photographic process and the enlarged ben-day dots refer to mass-media reproductions. The simultaneous presentation of multiple images, seemingly unified by one title, hints at a narrative relationship. However, Polke’s experiments with photochemical processes, non-traditional materials, found patterns, and layering of forms, relates his work to earlier Dada and Surrealist practices that sought to erase any implication of sequential events, a framing theme, or an interpretive approach.
