About this artwork
Shortly after the Buddha attained enlightenment, Makakayō (Sanskrit: Mahā-kāsyapa) became one of his disciples, rising to the head of the religious order following the Buddha’s death. He was a zealous ascetic who adopted an austere lifestyle, as suggested by the ragged robes he wears in this print.
