About this artwork
John Gaines III learned to turn banister-back chairs from his father, John Gaines, Jr. The younger Gaines brought this aesthetic tradition with him to Portsmouth but soon incorporated the graceful, curvilinear forms of the new late-Baroque style. This chair represents the transition between the older influence and new fashion.
