About this artwork
Guston made relatively few prints during his career, preferring to draw and paint in private. Nevertheless, he was one of the first artists of international stature whom June Wayne solicited for a fellowship at Tamarind. A chain of letters beginning in October, 1960 documents the workshop’s campaign to bring the artist to Los Angeles. When he finally relented, it was a compromise of time—one week as opposed to the customary six—resulting in only two prints. Like Louise Nevelson and others, the residency did link him to Irwin Hollander, with whom he would subsequently work at Hollander’s New York workshop.
