About this artwork
The portfolio Stones is a record of two friends working side-by-side over the course of two years. As this was Tatyana Grosman’s first book venture, she commissioned handmade paper for the lithographs, but for the inner folder she asked Douglass Howell to make a special denim paper to celebrate Larry Rivers and his collaborator, poet Frank O’Hara, both of whom always worked in blue jeans. In fulfilling her request, Howell in part used cuttings from their jeans for the paper pulp.
