A prominent New York newspaper photographer, Weegee (Arthur Fellig) would often listen to police radio in order to be the first to arrive at a scene. This perceived sixth sense earned him his nickname, a phonetic reference to Ouija boards. Weegee captured New Yorkers at their most vulnerable, exposing a raw and gritty side of the city imperceptible to many. Here, he documented the bloody aftermath of a bar brawl between two men over a woman, which ended with one of the men being shot; the woman holds the wounded man in her lap, preventing him from being lifted onto the stretcher.
