About this artwork

After Hoffmann and Moser, Dagobert Peche was probably the most important artist affiliated with the Wiener Werkstätte. He studied architecture and printmaking but became most engaged by the decorative arts and pattern design. Some of his textile patterns, such as this one, were provided to the workshop on a freelance basis for production as early as 1911, but in 1913 he officially become a member of the workshop leadership. Peche worked in a variety of styles, but one recurring theme involves fine, spidery line drawings of floral motifs, either gracefully curvilinear or, as is the case here, quirkily angular.
