About this artwork
Created during the worst years of the Great Depression, this print by Charles Turzak shows a syncopated arrangement of newspapers covering a group of sleeping homeless men. Chicago was one of the hardest-hit cities, enduring high unemployment rates. Instead of depicting Chicago monuments or the park’s landscape, Turzak focused on the indigent men who often slept in the park, near the city’s center of culture and commerce.
