About this artwork

Christopher Dresser’s designs for Old Hall Earthenware were mass-produced with transfer-printed decoration. This plate was printed with the Persia pattern. The name was derived from the pattern’s stylized flowers that reference Middle Eastern aesthetics. As a part of a larger dinner service, this plate was likely intended for the entrée potion of a meal. The indentations on the edges of the plate were designed to hold condiments like salt or mustard.
