About this artwork

Inspired by a photograph of a hunting-scene mural in Jilin Province, China, as well as by a Japanese ritual in which flowers are used as symbolic arrows, Munakata Shiko created this single large image made from 14 blocks. The hunters here are armed with flowers because, according to the artist, they are hunting with their hearts in an effort to celebrate the existence of all creatures.
