About this artwork
Created nearly twenty years after the event it depicts, this etching is modeled after Charles Le Brun’s original series of historical tapestries representing the conquests of Louis XIV. The scene commemorates the signing of the treaty at Soleure on September 4, 1663. The king is accompanied by his brother Philippe, the Prince de Condé, and his son, the due d’Enghien. Also present are Olivier d’Ormesson and the archbishop of Reims.
