About this artwork
This unsigned image depicting a scene from Christ’s Passion has been stylistically attributed to the Master S., a now unknown printmaker who led an active workshop. It is possible that the artist was the Antwerp goldsmith Alexander (or “Sander”) van Brugsal; he had an international taste in art, for he received four prints from Albrecht Dürer, a dinner guest, in August 1520. Most of the works produced by this artist were devotional, circular, and small enough to be used as designs for armor, tableware, or religious items.
