About this artwork
J. J. P. Oud’s design for a new stock exchange in Rotterdam features a dynamic, asymmetrical composition of two cubic volumes with strip windows. Oud was an early proponent of modern architecture and associated with several international groups working in this vein, including the German Werkbund and the International Congresses of Modern Architecture. He later developed a close relationship with American architect Philip Johnson, who brought his work to the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1932. Never constructed, this design adheres closely to the criteria Johnson and curator Henry-Russell Hitchcock set out in their famous exhibition and book, International Style.
