About this artwork
This monumental composition served as a modello, or presentation drawing, for Barroci’s altarpiece in Santa Croce in Senigallia. The sophisticated geometry of Barroci’s complex pictorial construction is revealed by his squaring of the work; the unusually energetic and brittle line may indicate his intention to have a print made to publicize this important commission in an out-of-the-way church.
