Two conservators work closely on a rug

Specializing in the preservation of textiles and fiber-based materials, textiles conservation staff study, treat, and care for over 13,500 objects in the collection, including tapestries, carpets, embroideries, furnishing and dress fabrics, garments, contemporary fiber art, and archaeological fragments. Inherent in this broad range of objects is a diverse array of fabrication techniques and component materials—plant fibers, animal hair, metal threads, and modern polymers—requiring specialized knowledge and skills along with a keen eye and vigilant oversight to ensure stability and survival for future generations.
