ATTENDANCE

Class meets from 9am to 4pm. 9am-12pm is our technical tutorial time and 1pm-4pm is the block of time designated for discussion, screening of work, and guest speakers.

Three unexcused absenses will result in a grade of incomplete or no credit depending on the situation. Chronic lateness will also result in the same (three late arrivals equals one absence). Also, if you are physically present, but do not engage in class discussions, critiques, and demonstrations, this will be regarded as an absence as well.

WORKSHOPS

Each week an electronic sketch will be demonstrated in class to help you see the range of possibilities the computer offers artists working with surveillance technologies. These sketches are intended to encourage an in-depth awareness of process rather than product–these sketches may be intentionally raw or unfinished; you may wish to modify them as you plan your final project.

READING + WRITING

For the first ten weeks of class, students will complete assigned reading for homework. Each reading assignment will be accompanied by a brief writing or studio assignment. A midterm project will involve your giving a 10 minute lecture on an artist who uses surveillance technologies or concepts in his or her work.

FINAL PROJECT

The final project will be a conceptually strong effort to integrate studio and discussion content into a polished art work or research paper.
