Loss of one of our own

On January 12th 2010 at 5:20 all of the members of the HAAE were affected by the tragic earthquake. Many of us were in Jakmel, Haiti. Those who weren't soon returned to find friends and help in any way possible. When the earthquake struck Flo McGarrell and Sue Frame were at a new hotel called the Peace of Mind Hotel having lunch and using the internet. Flo did not make it out of the building before it collapsed. Sue and Chery "Zaka" Claudel went to the hotel everyday til Flo's body was recovered. They took Flo home for Mom and Dad. Everyone else survived with no major medical issues.

During this tragedy more bonds have been formed. Soon after Sue returned to the US, Ivy McClelland and Kara left for Haiti. Ivy has helped build a birthing center, organize local women to spread children's health care information, and worked with many of the HAAE artists on many projects. Kara is associated with Konbit Pou Edikasyon as well as HAAE. Konbit Pou Edikasyon is an organization that works as advocates for child education. Kara spent much of her time looking for the children that her organization worked with. She also spent time in Jakmel working with the artists on many projects.

New Haitian members and friends of the HAAE are Zaka, Bonga, and the dance troupe LAKOU. New American members and frends are L.A. Teodoseo, and Erin Durban. Their pages are under construction now.

Help us to help our friends and collaborators. Get the word out! Say hello and ask what you can do to help. We have many projects, such as events, grants and fundraisors. Also follow our members and the new work that is being created now.

The Haitian & American Artist Exchange is a grassroots cultural exchange between American artists and artists from Jacmel, Haiti.

The collaboration began in Haiti when 8 artists worked together at the Foundation Art Center of Jacmel (FOSAJ) to help facilitate various creative workshops and other endeavors related to the International Music Festival that took place May 2007. Through this experience the eight artists found a common creative thread and formulated a desire and a pact to create a collaborative traveling show together in the US. and Haiti.

We continue to collaborate in order to share our views of our homes and lives. We hope that our efforts will widen the understanding of the veiwer and expand the connection between the two cultures.

Since this is a grassroots effort we need your help so that we can continue to work , travel and share.
