Course Overview

This one week course introduces the basic concepts, strategies, and techniques associated with creating multimedia web art using HTML, the basic syntax for publishing on the world wide web. In addition to HTML coding, tutorials will cover imaging for the web, web animation, web video, and web sound. Conceptually, we will create an electronic journal or sketchbook that deals in some way with some specific site in Chicago that interests you. Students will develop the skills to realize this project through in-class tutorials, demonstrations, discussions, and lectures during their week here in Chicago. The final project will be presented on the last day of class as an experimental web site and/or video.

Course Syllabus

The class will be divided into two sections which will alternate classrooms and teachers, each getting the same curriculum. See Tiffany and Shawn's individual links (located in the banner at the top of each page) for details on each day's syllabus.

Recommended Books to Purchase If you feel you need a reference

We highly recommend that you purchase a copy of Elizabeth Castro's HTML for the World Wide Web, published by Peachpit Press. This book is widely available from retail bookstores, or is available online from amazon.com, etc. Also, if you are likely to be doing much work using Macromedia's Dreamweaver (which will be introduced in the class), you might consider also purchasing J. Tarin Towers' Dreamweaver MX for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide, also published by Peachpit Press.

Visiting Artists

Each year, we invite a number of exciting visiting artists from across the country who give presentations on their work, in order to give participants a first-hand look at what artists are doing with technology, and how they are approaching it in their own work. This year, we are excited to have artists Lincoln Schatz, Scott Snibbe, Yael Kanarek, and John Simon visiting us. Click on each of their names to go to their web sites.
